Bumble Compliments still matter, but the name has changed in Bumble's current Help Center.

Bumble now calls them Notes and says Notes were previously called Compliments. They are short, friendly messages you can send before matching to react to a profile photo, prompt answer, shared interest, or something specific you like about the person (Bumble Support, "Sending Notes").

That makes Notes useful, but easy to misuse. A good Note is specific and respectful. A bad one feels copied, sexual, or like a sales pitch for yourself.

What are Bumble Compliments / Notes?

Bumble Compliments, now called Notes in Bumble Support, are message-before-match interactions.

Bumble says you can send a Note about:

  • A profile photo.
  • A prompt answer.
  • A shared interest.
  • Something you admire about the person.

Bumble also says Notes are designed to spark positive interactions, but they do not start a chat by themselves. A match is still required before messages can be exchanged (Bumble Support, "Sending Notes").

So think of a Note as an upgraded like with context. It can help someone understand why you are interested, but they still need to choose to match.

How to send a Bumble Note

Bumble's current instructions are:

  1. Open the person's profile.
  2. Tap the heart-in-a-speech-bubble icon or Send a Note.
  3. Choose what you want to respond to.
  4. Write a short message.
  5. Review it to make sure it reflects your real intention.
  6. Send it.

Bumble says the button may appear directly on the profile or when interacting with a specific photo or prompt (Bumble Support, "Sending Notes"). Bumble's public Compliments page describes a similar flow using the yellow heart icon and says the message can be up to 150 characters (Bumble, "Compliments on Bumble").

How recipients see Compliments

Bumble Support says if someone sends you a Note, you will see it when their profile appears in your People tab (Bumble Support, "Sending Notes"). Bumble's public Compliments page also says a received Compliment appears on the sender's profile and that you may get a notification (Bumble, "Compliments on Bumble").

Important: seeing a Note does not mean you are already in a chat. You still need a match before messages can continue.

Are Bumble Compliments free?

Availability and limits can vary, so check the Pay Plan screen in your own app.

Bumble's paid-features page lists Premium+ as including weekly Compliments/Notes, while Boost and Premium focus on different feature bundles (Bumble Support, "Understanding Bumble's paid features and subscription plans"). Bumble's public Compliments page also says Compliments are part of Premium+ membership (Bumble, "Compliments on Bumble").

Do not rely on old articles that mention a fixed number of free credits. Bumble changes feature access over time.

Before you rewrite everything, get your profile scored and see which photos are hurting your match rate.

Do Compliments disappear?

Bumble's current Notes article does not give a universal expiration rule for every sent Note. Avoid assuming a fixed 24-hour window unless the app shows one for your account.

A Note may stop being visible or useful if:

  • The recipient passes on your profile.
  • One of you deletes the account.
  • Bumble removes content that violates rules.
  • The feature or queue changes in your app.
  • You match and the conversation moves into the normal match flow.

If the app shows a timer, follow the in-app timer. If it does not, treat Notes as a timely first impression, not something to rely on days later.

What makes a good Bumble Compliment?

Bumble's own tips are simple: be specific, positive, respectful, and short. Bumble says one or two sentences works best and notes the 150-character limit (Bumble Support, "Sending Notes").

A good Note usually has this structure:

Specific detail + light reaction + easy question.

Examples:

  • "That climbing photo is excellent. What route got you hooked?"
  • "Your ramen ranking system sounds serious. What place is currently winning?"
  • "The bookstore prompt got me. What is the last book you pushed on a friend?"
  • "Your dog looks like he runs the household. What is his name?"
  • "I respect the strong espresso opinion. Where should I go for the best one in town?"
  • "That museum photo is cool. Are you more into modern art or old-master chaos?"

These work because they respond to something real and make the next reply easy.

Bumble Compliments to avoid

Avoid anything that could make the person feel objectified, pressured, or bored.

Weak examples:

  • "Hey."
  • "You are hot."
  • "Wow."
  • "I never do this but you seem different."
  • "Why are you single?"
  • "I bet you get this all the time."
  • "You should message me."

The problem is not only politeness. Generic Notes waste the one thing the feature gives you: a chance to react to a specific profile detail.

If your Bumble profile still is not getting matches, get a free profile score and a photo-by-photo action plan based on your actual photos.

How to get more Compliments on Bumble

You cannot force people to send Notes, but you can make your profile easier to react to.

Add profile elements that invite a specific comment:

  • A first photo where your face is clear.
  • One photo with a hobby, place, or activity someone can ask about.
  • A bio with one specific hook.
  • Prompts that reveal taste, humor, or a real preference.
  • Interest Badges that are accurate.
  • Photos that are current and easy to understand.

Bumble's profile advice recommends updated photos, Photo Verification, a bio, prompts, profile details, Interest Badges, realistic filters, and balanced swipe behavior (Bumble Support, "Standing out on Bumble"). Notes work better when your profile gives people something specific to mention.

Do Bumble Compliments work?

They can help, but they are not a shortcut around profile quality.

A thoughtful Note can help someone notice the reason you liked them. But Bumble is clear that a match is still required before messages can be exchanged. If your photos, bio, and prompts do not support the interest created by the Note, it may not lead anywhere.

Use Notes when:

  • You have something specific to say.
  • The profile gives you a natural hook.
  • You would genuinely want to match.
  • You can keep the message short and respectful.

Skip Notes when:

  • You only want to say something about looks.
  • You are trying to force attention from someone with no shared hook.
  • You cannot write anything more specific than "hey."
  • You are using it to send a message you would not say face to face.
